NYC has a reputation for being unsavory, seedy, and downright sleazy, but most people don’t realize that there are plenty of God-fearing New Yorkers. Or at least it would appear so due to the presence of the Blue Laws. You haven’t been able to buy liquor (in bottle form) on Sundays in New York since Prohibition. Of course, bars have been open and corner stores have been selling beer for years, but getting a bottle of Cabernet on Sunday? Forget it.

Well, no more. Quietly, or at least to me, New York has repealed the ban.

Strangely, liquor stores are required to be closed one day a week, which day is up to them, but it is certainly an improvement. It’ll be interesting to see how individiual liquor store owners react to the news. How long before an equilibrium forms where 50% of stores are open on Sundays and the rest on Mondays?
