I was browsing the site of an old colleague from MAYA, Dave Bishop, and noticed he linked to GeoURL to show his neighbors… So I thought I’d do the same. First you need your latitude and longitude, a visit to TerraServer reveals that, plus you get an aerial photo of my apartment and a topographic map. After registering with GeoURL, you see that I have a lot of neighbors. Now the fun begins…
In was only a matter of time. Jason Kottke moved to NYC from SF a couple of months ago and has discovered the rules of the subway.
I would add the converse of #8. If you’re on the train and pulling into Grand Central at rush hour and you want to get off, wait until the people nearest to the door get off first. You are not the only person getting off jackass.
Also, people on a crowded train that lean against the pole will be the first against the wall when the revolution comes.
It isn’t a rule, as much as a strategy, but pre-walking is essential.
NYC has a reputation for being unsavory, seedy, and downright sleazy, but most people don’t realize that there are plenty of God-fearing New Yorkers. Or at least it would appear so due to the presence of the Blue Laws. You haven’t been able to buy liquor (in bottle form) on Sundays in New York since Prohibition. Of course, bars have been open and corner stores have been selling beer for years, but getting a bottle of Cabernet on Sunday? Forget it.
Well, no more. Quietly, or at least to me, New York has repealed the ban.
Strangely, liquor stores are required to be closed one day a week, which day is up to them, but it is certainly an improvement. It’ll be interesting to see how individiual liquor store owners react to the news. How long before an equilibrium forms where 50% of stores are open on Sundays and the rest on Mondays?
Gargoyles in New York City has a few great shots of those “mythic protectors” of buildings.
After yet another debacle going through the Atlanta airport, I am back in New York City. I have a pile of email to go through, facial hair to make Shaggy proud, and a generous ponch, courtesy of the food and beer in New Orleans. Except site updates to resume shortly.
A good snowfall in NYC is pure bliss.
