Before I arrived on the scene, the decision was made to go with a browser-based solution. I thought a client/server application made more sense, however I went with it.
The first goal of the project was to improve navigation. Since we couldn’t change the screens themselves (we were using screenscraping to do the browser implementation), we could provide the crucial element that was missing from the 3270 implementaion: context. The top navigation bar provides four methods to access screens, by type, by task, favorites, or by searching.
The second goal was to simply cleanup the awful display. Some simple graphic design changes made the site much easier to handle.
