Fun with frames

The United site was built using frames, and picking up on something we did on QVC we were able to modify a few frames and improve the navigation throughout the site.

This allowed us even more flexibility on the homepage design.

An issue with the old site was a bizarre split in the main sections. Four were grouped under “Airline” and the other four were under “Traveler”. The global navigation only provided links to the main sections under the current umbrella (traveler or airline). We were able to remove this artificial split and provide links to all eight sections.

The original design contained a frame with an indicator of which of the two umbrella sections and a dropdown menu that linked to sibling pages. A simple information design tweak allowed us to provide breadcrumbs. We kept this menu, but were able to clean up the frame to provide some hierarchy to the information that made them appear as breadcrumbs.
